Neuroanatomy Self-Portrait

Anatomical Illustration, Medical Illustration, Neuroanatomy

Description

The aim of this project was to create an illustrated self-portrait with our brain visible in situ. The challenge was to orient the brain in relation to facial features and the bony landmarks of the skull.

For this self-portrait, I chose to segment the brain coronally to show the internal structures of the brain. A antero-lateral view was chosen both because the 3/4 view is a standard for traditional portraiture, and because this angle shows the three-dimensional structure of the brain well.

The rendering style used pays homage to traditional art styles using oil paint and chalk pastel.
